Copenhagen

Copenhagen is the capital city of Denmark. It is located on the east coast of Zealand and partly on Amager, and also to east, it faces Oresund, which is a narrow channel which separates Denmark from Sweden, and at the same time, connects the North Sea to the Baltic Sea. The capital boasts of being the most visited place by tourists and visitors in Denmark. It is the center of Danish government, administration and finance.

The name Copenhagen or Kobenhavn originally means “trading harbor". The city of Copenhagen is in many ways the harbour for Denmark - and even the rest of Scandinavia. A Baltic cruise often starts in Copenhagen which leaves for Saint Petersburg, Stockholm, Tallinn and other of the cities in Baltic Sea. Copenhagen Airport is the largest airport in Scandinavia. It is conveniently placed east of the city with train and metro connection directly to the centre.

Copenhagen is in the oceanic climate which is the climate usually found along the west coasts at the middle latitudes of some of the world's continents. It always experiences unstable and constant changes in the weather in all four seasons. It has cold winters and warm – but rarely baking hot – summers where temperatures rise to around 21°C.  Winters are typically around 0°C for much of the season, although snow rarely stays on the ground for long. Moderate rain fall are scattered all throughout the year. The city always has a gloomy weather meaning grey skies are a common sight all throughout the year.

The population in Copenhagen is not especially large. The latest edition of statistics shows that in the urban area of Copenhagen is inhabited by 1.7 million people and the city itself is close to having 1.2 million inhabitants.

Copenhagen is one of Europe’s coolest tourist destinations. It has a charming centre with many small streets and interesting historic buildings and places to visit. The smallest - but also the most famous - tourist attraction in Copenhagen is Den Lille Havfure or “The Little Mermaid”. This attraction has become almost a symbol of the city of Copenhagen. It was set in its present place in 1913. It sits on a natural rock just at the waterfront at Langelinie - Northern part of the Copenhagen Harbour. The Little Mermaid is the work of Edvard Ekiksen, a Danish sculptor.

Copenhagen is home to an impressive selection of museums including the famous National Museum of Denmark, Nationalmuseet, which holds the largest collection of Danish historical items in the world, National Arts Gallery or the Statens Museum for Kunsthas has collections dating from 12th century to currently active artists.

The Tivoli Gardens of Copenhagen is a special place for its amusement park and pleasure garden. It is more than a hundred years old and is located in the centre of the city that keeps some of the old mix of culture, charm and amusement you rarely find in modern parks. Besides the rides, Tivoli Gardens also serve as a venue for various performing arts and as an active part of the cultural scene in Copenhagen.

In a country rich in Viking history, Copenhagen has its Royal Castles to be proud of. The royal castle, Amalienborg is now residence of Queen Margrethe 2. There is the Rosenborg Castle, which is no longer used as a residence for the royal family but it contains many interesting rooms, furniture and - not least - the royal jewels which are still used by the queen on special occasions.

Every year in February and August, Copenhagen celebrates Fashion Week.  It is one of the biggest events in the fashion and textile business of Europe. Fashion and clothing companies now come to Copenhagen from many places from around the world to see the latest creations.

Copenhagen Jazz Festival is another regular event in Copenhagen that takes place in the summer days. The festival is an annual 10-day event dedicated to Jazz music.

With regards to Copenhagen’s economy, it holds the highest rank, as it is the economic and financial centre of Denmark. It has a service oriented economy. International companies have established their regional headquarters in Copenhagen, for example Microsoft and Maersk the world's largest container shipping company.

Copenhagen is well-known for its best tasting beers where the globally popular brewed beers Carlsberg of Carlsberg Breweries are manufactured and produced. There are many a varied combination of different points of interest and activities that tourists certainly enjoy in the city and its cobblestone streets, Old Danish homes and historical structures. These are wonderful points of interest itself, as well as the ultra-modern attractions that are added in almost every year.

Coming and visiting the capital of Denmark will be worth your while for it is definitely a great city, and one who deserves to be recognized worldwide.
